Karenni people and culture

The Karenni is a collective name. It includes about 9 different sub-groups. The majority group is the Kayah. The Kayah speak Kayah li. This is the dominant language inside Karenni State To learn more about our people, culture and language, please follow this link.

Karenni history

Karenni people are thought to have migrated into the region of Kayah State in the first millenium BCE. In more recent history the Karenni have faced a long running conflict with the Burmese Army. To learn more about our history, please follow this link.

Karenni state’s situation

Currently, there is a ceasefire in Karenni State so there is no active armed conflict. However, Karenni State still faces a number of challenges including land confiscation, damming of rivers and mining. To learn more about our history, please follow this link.
