Karenni People

karenni peopleKarenni (or Red Karen) are a distinct ethnic and national group.

The Karenni States in Burma were recognized as independent by the British in 1875, and later incorporated into Burma in 1947 on terms that they could become independent again after 10 years.

The Karenni people’s right to political independence has not been recognized since, despite several attempts to succeed.

The Karenni have been involved in a violent civil war in Myanmar/Burma. Many are now living in refugee camps in Thailand.
